Open-source software provides users with the freedom of code sharing, modifying, and redistributing. Most open-source software is available for free (this may not always be the case) hence commonly coined as Free and Open Source Software (FOSS).

Open source is a great way to get real-world software development experience from the comfort of your home. The open-source community is very helpful and encourages new developers to take part in their organizations. You gain exposure, test your skills, gain knowledge, and bond with the community to produce quality code that helps people around the world. You write code that benefits the user community.

Google Summer of Code

Application starts in January for organization and once the organizations get selected, students can apply to the organization. Students can register and submit their applications to mentor organizations by March, 2021. In May the projects will be announced. Students can submit their code, project summaries, and final evaluations of their mentors by august.

Successful Google Summer of Code applicants get a $3000 to $6600 stipend*

MLH Fellowship

The MLH Open Source Fellowship is a 12 week internship alternative for students interested in becoming software engineers. Instead of an internship at a single company, you’ll contribute to the type of Open Source projects that every company depends on. There is another track for this. The MLH Explorer Fellowship is a 12 week internship alternative for students interested in becoming software engineers. You’ll build out your portfolio of personal projects & experiment with new technologies by collaborating in small groups on a series of short hackathon sprints.

Applicants get a up to $5000 stipend*

You need to showcase your past writing exp. with the organization to get selected.

Google Summer of Docs applicants get a $2000 to $6600 stipend*

Outreachy

It is remote internship and only few students are selected. Applications opens in February. Interns work with experienced mentors from open source communities. Outreachy internship projects may include programming, user experience, documentation, illustration, graphical design, data science, project marketing, user advocacy, or community event planning.

Outreachy internships are 3 months long. Interns are paid an internship stipend of $5,500 USD. Interns have a $500 USD travel stipend to attend conferences or events.

Hacktober Fest by Digital Ocean

There is no stipend for this program. You will receive swags and t-shirt for completing this.

Foss Asia Internship Program

Before apply make sure you have contributed to FOSSASIA projects before. In the program they are looking for people who would like to work on the project they choose continuously. Different to GSoC in the internship it is not only about a specific project proposal. We rather look for participants who are interested to advance the project and solve bugs or add features that are required to bring the project forward. Check the FOSSASIA github and start contributing before applying.

Redox Summer of Code

RSoC provides more freedom than the GSoC program. Any person can participate, on a schedule of their choosing, for the payment of their choosing.

Open Summer of Code (OSoC) for Students

Developers, designers, communication managers, business analysts, data scientists etc can apply for this open source program.

Google Summer of Earth Engine (SoEE)
